[Edit: It appears IHG has fixed the glitch on their end as many people now report seeing the certificates in their accounts online.]
This may be of use to some. If you still have Free Night Certificates from IHG’s Into The Nights promotion that occurred in 4th quarter 2014, you can convert those certificates to 50,000 points for a limited time. That promotion was one of IHG’s best in recent memory in which it was possible to earn two free night certificates and a ton of points for as little as $400 in spend.
I called IHG today to use the last of my two earned certificates. I would have just booked it online, but had checked my account earlier and the certificate wasn’t displayed, even though I knew I still had one available that expired on December 31st 2015.
The agent I spoke to said that their reservation system has recently changed, and the new system was having problems with these old certificates. I asked to make a reservation and she said she could do this by deleting the free night certificate, manually adding the required points to my account, and booking the reservation with points. I obliged, and 45,000 points were immediately added and deducted from my account.
In effect this means you can book a room at one of IHG’s top tier properties, cancel the booking, and have 50,000 points refunded to your account. If you still have two certificates, you can earn back 100,000 points.
This is beneficial if:
- You have stays planned at lower tier hotels. You can use the refunded points to stay four nights at a Category 5 IHG property like the Presidente Cozumel Resort and Spa instead of just two.
- You have no plans to use your Free Night Certificates before they expire later this year. IHG points don’t expire, so you can extend them indefinitely using this trick.
I have no idea how long IHG’s systems will be screwed up, but I’d treat this as a very limited time option.
Good luck and happy stays!
