Mileage Expiration Rules

The absolute worst mistake you can make with your miles and points accounts is letting miles expire. Even Spirit Airlines has redemption options for magazines if you can’t use your mileage balance before the rigid expiration window of 90 days.

To help keep everyone aware of the expiration dates for various programs, I’ve compiled a list of most major airline mileage programs for US based flyers, hotel points, travel rewards programs and bank rewards point currencies I know of. If I’ve missed a major one, please let me know!

The words “from” and “after” as used below are important. If miles expire 3 years AFTER earning, there is no way to keep those miles beyond the initial three years unless otherwise mentioned. If miles expire 3 years FROM last earning, any earning activity in the account will reset the clock and you will have another three years to earn any miles in the account, regardless of then each mile was originally earned.
